Luke Parkhurst, nephew of my golf buddy Special Ed, is on a very long bike adventure from San Francisco to NYC via British Columbia. I met Luke for a moment as he passed through Ashland and must say I envy his spirit. He just graduated from high school and is taking a break before going to college. I certainly didn’t have the guts or imagination to conceive of such an adventure at his age and can only admire his zeal and determination. He is a gregarious kid, writes well and takes excellent photos. His on line journal
posted using some special software using pay phones along the way show he is still in Canada though Ed reports that Luke has made it as far as Missoula. His log is titled “Wandering from CA to BC to NYC: No Car for a Year." He plans to end up in NYC and get a job as a waiter. HIs diary is a good read and illustrates that one can peddle thousands of miles on a vegetarian diet. Also, with Luke as an example, there’s hope for the younger generation.
I know I'm totally inspired!!! I hope he goes to some high schools to show them what a great way to travel in their gap year might be.
