It’s quiet on Lummi Island. There’s never too much to report. But there is a lot to see http://lummiphotos.blogspot.com. (My brother Richard's site) Yesterday it was the long bike ride, twelve miles in a kind of figure eight with a nice break at Mandala beach for a sun soak leaning up against a wild formation of Chuckannut sandstone.
Today Linda will attend the Ladies Civic Club Meeting at the community church. Saturday there’s the All-Island Talent Show ($10 for adults and $4 for children. Doors open at 6:15. Show starts at 7:30. Seating is limited). If we were staying longer we’d catch one of the two annual Artist’s Studio Tours and the workshop on “how to attract bats and swallows” to your property sponsored by the Heritage Trust, a group that’s trying to buy and conserve property on the island. More family members are due this weekend so we’ll have a party. The tiny library is open today (and Friday and Saturday) and I hear they now have high speed wireless. Need to test that out. And the Beach Cafe is supposed to be open seven days a week instead of five. Business must be good. The Farmer’s Market (two to three organic farmers) begins on the twenty-first. They set up next to the Islander Store along with the pie lady and the salsa lady and the Heritage Trust who sells t-shirts and everyone drops by. One of the “farmers” is retired from the World Bank and teaches at WWU. (But he dresses like a farmer). The island has been getting way too much publicity lately. http://seattletimes.nwsource.com/html/travel/2002248734_lummi24.html There’s really nothing for sale so I guess it doesn’t matter. On our ride we saw three houses under construction. Not exactly a building boom.
Islands aren’t for everyone. Some people feeling claustrophobic as soon as they get here. Others find instant relief from mainland tension. Some people are coming. Others are leaving. Tide comes in; tide goes out. It’s quiet on Lummi Island but the grass is growing so fast you can almost see it. Gotta go mow.
So for the talent show, are you going to the harmonica or the yo-yo?
